I didn't think of where I was going, or the danger. Stupid, really. I just continued down through each floor until I reached the Pit. It seemed appropriate to be next to the screams from the tortured souls of the Pit. It matched my mood and my internal screams. I was angry enough to take on the damn dragon if she showed up.
I was a fool! I'd let my guard down and finally gave the bastard what he wanted, and he rejected me. Of course. Of course, he rejected me. He set me up and then knocked me the fuck down. I was a set of bowling pins to Lucian.
A roar filled the air. Shit. I hadn't been serious about taking on the dragon. The small alcove I'd seen when Lucian and I were there to check out Sammael's portal caught my eye. I crawled inside and watched the dragon as she landed in the middle of the bridge. She was gorgeous, with a long, lithe body and a thick, powerful tail, as we'd seen when she nearly killed Lucian with it. Her black scales glittered as she watched me. She had silver streaks on her sides that resembled lightning bolts.
Lucifer would've healed on his own eventually. A Fallen Angel wasn't so easy to kill. But she'd certainly surprised him and knocked his ass out.
I had half a mind to call him down here and let her do it again.
She looked back at me with a sad expression, blinking her pure silver eyes. I studied her and realized she was different this time. Was the spell broken?
The muffled screams and groans filtered up from the depths of the Pit, echoing around her. I closed my eyes and lost my thoughts in the sounds of the souls. What I should have done was leave Hell. Get the fuck out of Dodge. Leave Lucian to clean up his mess.
Why hadn't I? Why had I stayed?
The flap of dragon wings brought my gaze to the bridge, which was now empty. I saw the dark portal on the other side. Sammael's portal. He had the scrolls in there. I wasn't sure how I knew that. I just did. I didn't know where we'd come through when we'd gone through the portal in his chambers here in Hell or if the scrolls were there, too and we'd just been run out, but if this portal lit up, we needed to get through it.
The dragon flew down and landed on a shelf in the rock like she had after she injured Lucian. She couldnât fit into the alcove, but she was close enough that we could talk, but she couldn't hurt me if she was still nuts. âHow is Lucifer? I didnât mean to harm him. Does he know that?â
I stared into her silver eyes and saw sadness and worry there. It occurred to me that Ezel liked Lucian. âYes, he knows. Heâs not mad at you. And heâs healed.â
Ezel sighed in relief. Her warm breath washed over me.
